October 1 - October 26
The 2018 “Rio Challenge” – Rio’s Run – 1st October 2018
Challenge: Charity Run from Melbourne to Sydney
Distance: Approx. 1013Kms
As part of Rio’s Legacy’s (RL) vision to support children with a terminal illness and their families, each year RL will aim to do a “Rio Challenge” in efforts to fundraise / donate and create awareness for this cause. This year’s challenge will be Rio’s Run.
On the 30th September / 1st October (TBC) we will be running from Melbourne to Sydney (over 1000kms) to raise funds, promote awareness and support children with a terminal illness and their families. Rio (17 months old) survived 5 major operations (including 2 amputations, heart and kidney failure) only be told he had a terminal illness after all this. Bear Cottage is a children’s hospice / respite facility in Manly and if it wasn’t for this place to support my son, wife, daughter and I, I don’t know how we would have survived the passing of young Rio in January.
Australia needs more children’s hospices to help support kids with a terminal illness and their families during the most difficult time in their lives. Currently there are ONLY 3 children’s hospices / respite facilities in Australia and as such there is a desperate need for more. Rio’s Legacy through Rio’s Run is looking to support and provide much needed finance for a young adults hospice similar to Bear Cottage.
Rio’s Run will leave Melbourne’s Federation Square on and look to arrive at The Scots College Main Oval, Bellevue Hill NSW on the 26th October, where Rio called home. Rio’s Run will be divided into legs and details will be online soon. Rio’s Legacy is indeed grateful and humbled by your support and generosity in our efforts to support children with a terminal illness and their families.
Rio’s Legacy is hoping to raise $1 MILLION for the run…

Life is a precarious journey, but what Rio (like so many other children) taught us is:
- To always live your life to the fullest / cherish every moment and every smile
- To be resilient and
- To never giving up despite the odds being very much against you.
Rio’s Run this year, is our way of demonstrating those values through tough / hard times and within this journey seek to raise much needed funds to give back to those who face lives toughest pathway…living with the unknown.
If you can donate, or know someone who can; if you can share and assist in promoting awareness, it would be greatly appreciated…because these kids are all fearfully and wonderfully made…
