October 1 - October 26
The 2018 “Rio Challenge” – Rio’s Run – 1st October 2018
Challenge: Charity Run from Melbourne to Sydney
Distance: Approx. 1027Kms
Days: 26 days
As part of Rio’s Legacy’s (RL) vision to support children with a terminal illness and their families, each year RL will aim to do a “Rio Challenge” in efforts to fundraise and create awareness for this cause. This year’s challenge will be Rio’s Run.
On the 1st October we will be running from Melbourne to Sydney (over 1000kms) to raise funds, promote awareness and support children with a terminal illness and their families. Rio (17 months old) survived 5 major operations (including 2 amputations, heart and kidney failure) only be told he had a terminal illness after all this. Bear Cottage is a children’s hospice / respite facility in Manly and if it wasn’t for this place to support Rio, we don’t know how we would have survived the passing of young Rio in January.
Australia needs more children’s hospices to help support kids with a terminal illness and their families during the most difficult time in their lives. Currently there are ONLY 3 children’s hospices / respite facilities in Australia and as such there is a desperate need for more. Rio’s Legacy through Rio’s Run is looking to support and provide much needed finance for a young adults hospice similar to Bear Cottage.
Rio’s Run will leave Melbourne’s Very Special Kids (Malvern – one of the 3 hospices in Australia) on Monday 1st October and 26 days later arrive at The Scots College Main Oval, Bellevue Hill NSW on Friday 26th October, where Rio called home.
